July 11

Perfectly clear crisp morning in Whitehorse.  I know it is getting old... and frankly I'm running out of adequate adjectives....  just awesome scenery as we headed toward Alaska.

The road was a bit like riding on gentle ocean swells..... well.... if they were pretty close together, covered with loose gravel, 'fresh oil' - really... that is what the sign said- fresh oil, like we'd be offended if they'd put 'old oil' on the loose gravel, and lets not forget the parts where they watered it down to make a bit of a mud slurry.... Okay, I guess  it wasn't so much like gentle ocean swells as accessorized  gravel covered moguls. The guys were pretty sure we'd see a " New Banana Peels" sign next. My personal favorite was "Extremely Dusty Conditions"... really? ya think??? ... good thing there was a sign to let us know! ;-)

I know that sounds bad, but really it was quite a hoot.  They don't really have anything over on the gravel artistry of Fairfax, VT.  Though we don't usually put 'fresh oil' on the road.

... there were many many miles of just beauty surrounding us!

There is another nice thing about a road that bucks and chokes and simultaneously delights ..  it tends to build real camaraderie among the travelers.  We stopped (at long last !! as many of the gas stations have closed) for a cool drink for us and the bikes.  Others had the same idea...... We ran into most of these guys again during the day - always a wave or a bit of conversation..

Once we crossed over to the United States the road was smooth and had quite a few nice sweepers .... Wha Hoo... real motorcycle riding!

Crazy as it  sounds - we came back from dinner and Mark noticed his tire looked a little low.  A hole in the tube... AGAIN!

...and the boys don plastic gloves and get out the lubricant.....

..
Ahhhh..... a good day to be sure!  Tomorrow Fairbanks.....

  1. Wow! At least it would appear that the weather was cooperative. The skys and scenery fantastic. I didn't hear anything about a birthday cake or other celebratory activities. I noted that your posting was done a little after midnight. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Ya know... despite the gloves and lube, I'm beginning to wonder if Mark and Larry are "doing it wrong" ;-)
Hope that this latest one holds air for a bit longer.
And yes, I really am envious.
