July 5

Malta to Kalispell
Got off to an early start - on the road at 6:30 am, breakfasted 89 miles later in Havre.  It was a cool, clear, beautiful ride, but I was ready for a hot cup of coffee by  the time we stopped.

The theme for today was dealing with Larry's bike's oil addiction.  We had an intervention and lined her up for some professional assessment in Kalispell.  A little oil is appropriate but more than a quart for 500 miles and getting worse presents itself as a problem.  The professional help is 200+ miles away from our breakfast spot so we were back on the road... Heading toward the magnificent Rockies!
Did I mention that I love Montana? Such great landscapes - then to top it off with Glacier National Park.
'I want to go to there!'

Discussed riding the Road  to the Sun - but checked and it is still closed due to snow.  We took Rt. 2 just south of the park..... which turned out to be under major construction.   (Mark and Loretta playing in the road.. again!)

There were parts that were beautiful, but it was hot and dusty sitting on the road (okay, I was actually lying on the road of my own volition and so should not be complaining of the dust... just wanted you to know that I know all that) and we were eager to get Larry's bike to the shop so they could take a look at it...

We arrived around 3:30 pm or so - cool stuff at "Fastoys" in Kalispell.  After quite a lot of nothing in particular it turns out we have to go back tomorrow when their tech help is open. Larry also looked at a brand new KLR, and the owner had a gently used one identical to mine... We shall see what tomorrow brings.

Our shortest day mileage-wise but construction and the unknown seems to have warn us out - at least both the guys are zonked out already. :-) Give me 10 minutes.........

Let you know how tomorrow goes and if we make it into the wild North.

  1. Lovely photos, I rode through Montana last year on my cross country trip, it's on my blog under cross country trip. I loved the open expanses of Montana. How old is the KLR with the thirst for oil?

  2. Hey George, Can't remember if I responded to this or not... Larry's oil sucking bike was a 2008. It is a known problem, it just didn't present itself until this trip. L.
