July 10

Note: When you are a believer in ATGATT (all the gear all the time) a simple task like going to the bathroom is fairly complicated, adding soaking wet rain gear on top of other gear and standing in an outhouse barely big enough to stand upright in....adds a whole new dimension - just in case you were wondering.

Mark just mentioned that it rained just long enough this morning - while we were going by incredibly beautiful Muncho Lake - isn't that a funny name??--- to get us damp for the day's ride.  We didn't take any pictures of the lake because it was pouring rain, but even in the rain it was pretty.

We saw at least 6 bears today - I'd lost count, but Larry said six.  This brown one ---- ( it seems that a 1/3 of the black bears in the Yukon are actually brown)--- was totally interested in the berries or clover  and we were fairly close.

It was a good day for animals.  There was a heard of horses grazing on either side of the road - there was a discussion about whether they were wild horses or just newly emancipated....  We also rode through a large herd of bison.  There were probably 2 dozen little calves and their moms.

British Columbia was beautiful but time to head into the Yukon!

We stopped in Watson Lake at the Sign Forest - there are over 71,000 signs now ... not that I counted them.  I tried to call Colin to see where his sign was but Verizon just wouldn't work with me.

We are starting to run into many of the same motorcyclist as we get closer to Alaska. There is a young couple on a couple of GS motorcycles and Ken - on an incredibly packed KLR.  He retired recently and decided to take the summer to go to Alaska. We met him in Watson Lake ....

.... and then chatted again when we stopped for a late lunch.

The GS kids showed up again as well....  Talked with them again as we were looking for a hotel.

Beauty is the theme....

About 10 years ago or so I enjoyed a canoe trip down the Teslin and Yukon rivers with a couple of girlfriends.  I was especially happy to have Larry see where we put in - I pointed, he knew what I meant and took a picture. ( My camera died in the rain storm yesterday - just bought a little cheap on in Whitehorse to replace it.)

I can hardly believe it - ALASKA *tomorrow!  Looking forward to a little gravel.....  Some ladies at a hotel said the road was really bumpy and all gravel. Geez... I hope so! ...after all - we bothered to buy dual purpose motorcycles! :-)

*to Colin and Leon..... cheers! 2 years ago you celebrated my birthday with me in Montana. Life is good!

  2. Happy Birthday, Lolo! Today is the day and I hope the sun shines on you all day today! It sounds like you are making great progress and also seeing a lot more wildlife than I saw on my trip 5 years ago. Enjoy the ride through Haine's Junction..there was a neat little ice cream shop there when I rode through....
