July 4

First... I just love those Freudian typos.. we actually did a good deed , but I was indeed dead tired when I blogged last night.

Onward to today's adventures...
Happy 4th of July from North Dakota!

We left Devil's Lake around 7:00 and ran into a detour on Rt 2 much sooner than we'd anticipated.... the detour alone was over 100 miles. (Poor Minot...and so many other towns in North Dakota.)

At one point we were actually headed southeast.  Larry pointed out it would take a pretty long time to get to Alaska taking that route.

Once we were back on 2 west we picked up a steady brisk wind  from the north that felt like it'd like to blow us to South Dakota.  Despite wind we enjoyed lovely countryside... flooded as much of it was.

.... with miles of sweet smelling purple clover and bright yellow fields...

Montana's landscape is gently surprising .....  and a delight.
More tomorrow on Montana as we reach the Rockies and start a northern trek.

I hear fireworks going off.... :-)

Miles: 515 (we think.... )

  1. Wow, I ordered a Yamaha Tenere last year just so I can go to Alaska next year, I had looked at the KLR but everyone told me single cylinder is tough at 70mph for long distances :-(
You guys are tough, 500+ miles in one day, how is it riding the KLR?
Enjoying the photos, ride safe :-)

  2. .... Hi George~ We're not so tough. The woman bicycling to Prudhoe Bay and then to Tierra Del Fuego is tough! :-) 500 miles on a stock seat KLR feels a lot longer than it does on my street bike. The mechanic at Yukon Yamaha had a brand new Tenere. I had to sit on it and take a picture of it. Just gorgeous, and he was very happy with it. An excellent choice in my opinion. Are you going to trade out tires? Another motorcyclist did this trip on RPII.... I think I'd rather have something a little knobbier though.

  3. I'm glad you got to see the Tenere, I just picked mine up a few hours ago. Got it sitting outside in my driveway, I'm so happy with it. The 2 cylinder and the 270 degree firing order (like the Yamaha R1) gives it a sound like a big Thumper, really nice and deep sound. Keep safe.
